Participants from East and Southeast Asia will support achievements, challenges, opportunities, national initiatives and implementation of education for sustainable development at the country level to strengthen ESD towards the 2030 global network. The main objectives of the subregional online meetings are to:
- Promote ESD awareness among key educators and ensure consistent understanding of key concepts such as the ESD Framework for 2030, ESD-Net and ESD Country Initiatives.
- Provide opportunities for mutual learning and capacity building in the planning and implementation of national initiatives for Member States, especially those that have started but have not yet developed national initiative plans.
- Strengthen cooperation and partnerships at national and subregional levels to address and overcome common subregional challenges in ESD implementation through the participation of key implementing partners in ESD implementation.
The East and Southeast Asia Sub-Regional Consultation was a preparatory meeting for the ESD-Net 2030 Regional Conference to be held from 12-14 June 2023 in Bali, Indonesia.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is key to ensuring that member countries’ education sectors are responsive to the urgent and dramatic challenges facing our planet. Participants agreed that containing global warming before it reaches catastrophic levels means addressing environmental, social and economic issues in a holistic way.
All participants representing member countries in East and Southeast Asia were encouraged to develop and implement.national initiative Mainstreaming ESD in the pursuit of sustainable development goals and visions. At the national level, UNESCO is committed to promoting national multi-stakeholder ESD engagement and strengthening the ESD for 2030 national initiative.
Participants stressed the need to strengthen ESD at the national level towards 2030 national initiatives.
