Q: I have reached retirement age at the company. How will my retirement affect my SHRM credential?

A: Leaving a job or organization does not change the SHRM credential or recertification requirements. However, if you plan to fully retire from the HR profession, you may apply for retired status of your qualification. This means you no longer need to earn Professional Development Credits (PDC) to recertify.

Q: How do I qualify as a retiree?

A: To obtain qualified retirement status, you must be fully retired from the Human Resources profession.that means you can’t Any HR operations, full-time or part-time — including consulting, education, etc.

Q: If new opportunities convince me to return from retirement, can I continue to qualify after retirement?

A: yes. To reactivate your certification, please email your request to recertification@shrm.org.

Q: What happens if my credential is reactivated after my credential is terminated?

A: Reactivation restores the standard requirement to maintain eligibility by earning 60 PDC within three years. You will be given a new start date for your new three-year recertification cycle. As in the past, you must recertify every three years unless you retire from HR work.
