Rodney Dowell has coached at many schools in Texas, but Van Fleck will be his last assignment.

Dowell, 55, announced his retirement via text message Friday night.

Dowell served as Van Fleck’s athletic director and head football coach for the past two seasons.

He led the Leopards to a 14-3A division II championship in 2021 and two second-district playoff appearances with a 13-9 career record.

Dowell recently assumed a management role within the Van Fleck district, with Shannon Parmenter appointed interim athletic director and head football coach.

Dowell came to Van Fleck from Bowling, where he was his assistant for three seasons.

Dowell also served as head coach for Flatonia for one season and Louise for three seasons. His career record is 34-32.

Dowell was the offensive coordinator and middle school coordinator for six seasons at Harrettsville and was the head basketball coach for two seasons at Bramath.

Dowell has also served as an assistant coach at Medina Valley, Brookshire Royale, Blanco and Lockney.
