Lexus has taken big risks with its styling, powertrain and trim construction for the 2024 GX off-road SUV. The automaker opted for a retro-futuristic look, fitted a twin-turbo V-6 powertrain as standard, and added off-road-optimized Overtrail trim to his GX lineup for the first time. Lexus has now announced that it will expand its Overtrail sub-brand to other models in its lineup.
What is Overtrail Trim?
Overtrail models represent the most demanding applications of Lexus off-road technology. The 2024 GX Overtrail has a number of trim-specific upgrades that should give a hint of what future vehicles might be equipped with. All 2024 GX Overtrail models come standard with 33-inch tires and 18-inch wheels, wider treads, deeper rear he treads and an electronically locking rear differential. Lexus equips the GX Overtrail with Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor. These models are also offered the automaker’s Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system, which decouples the front stabilizer bar to improve wheel articulation.
Customization options by grade include a variety of two-tone paint schemes and Olive Ultrasuede accents for the interior. The exclusive Overtrail+ trim features a unique seat pattern, front seats with massage function and an electric extendable driver’s seat cushion.
GX chief engineer Koji Tsukazaki said, “Of course we will monitor customer feedback, but that is the direction of the country.” Tsukazaki added that Lexus is not yet ready to reveal which models will have Overtrail variants in the future and when those products will be available. However, with the GX confirmed to be a core off-road product and impacting the fitment of its neighbors, we expect the automaker to offer similar capabilities to its flagship full-size SUV LX 600 over time.
What else does the Lexus Overtrail sub-brand offer?
Lexus said its Overtrail sub-brand won’t be limited to beefed-up versions of its SUVs. As buyers in Japan’s domestic market get excited about camping and exploring the great outdoors, automakers are ready to support their owners’ wanderlust.
Japan’s Fuji Speedway has an off-road course where customers were able to drive Lexus ROV concept dune buggies in a 24-hour endurance race. In this vein, Lexus said Overtrail is “a global program with a wide variety of activities and experiences that will continue to grow.” Details have yet to be finalized, but the automaker says it’s working to develop overtrails that go far beyond the accessories and features of Lexus vehicles.
When will the Lexus Overtrail models be available?
The 2024 Lexus GX debuts in Overtrail and Overtrail+ trim levels, which sit at the center of the six trim lineup. The Premium and Premium+ models form the basis, with the Luxury and Luxury+ grades at the top of the range. All 2024 Lexus GX SUVs will be built at the Tahara plant in Japan and will go on sale in early 2024.
