Amazon invests $100 million in AWS Generative AI Innovation Center

Amazon Web Services is pouring $100 million into a new generative AI program aimed at bringing AI and machine learning tools to enterprise customers. The Generative AI Innovation Center aims to connect AWS AI experts with customers who want to learn how to apply generative AI to their business models.

Generative AWS

Amazon describes the Generative AI Innovation Center as a hub for AWS customers to participate in “free workshops, engagements and training” on generative AI and collaborate with people closely associated with technology to come up with customized services. I explained that it is. In other words, her AWS customers with non-technical businesses may be very excited about generative AI, but they don’t know what they can do with it, and they don’t know how to incorporate it. .

AWS envisions an innovation center to help companies develop ideas built around the Bedrock toolset. Amazon proposed a very wide range of verticals, from financial planners personalizing investment advice, to manufacturers updating designs with the help of AI, to medical researchers doing pharmaceutical research with the help of AI. Initial partners for the Innovation Center include sales software developer Highspot, travel guide publisher and tourism organizer Lonely Planet, and customer service platform Twilio. While the Innovation Center appears to be aimed at existing businesses, Amazon is also eyeing young startups through its generative AI accelerator.

“Amazon has over 25 years of AI experience, with over 100,000 customers using AWS AI and ML services to address some of the biggest opportunities and challenges. We are looking for guidance on how to get started quickly and securely with generative AI,” said Matt Garman, AWS Senior Vice President. “The Generative AI Innovation Center, along with our team of Generative AI experts, will harness all that this new technology has to offer, as well as provide flexible and cost-effective generative AI services for the enterprise, enabling any organization to become AI-enabled. We work with our global community of partners to work with business leaders across all industries to maximize the impact of generative AI in their organizations, helping customers, We are helping our employees create value in our bottom line.”

AWS specifically plans to bring the Amazon Bedrock portfolio of generative AI tools to projects. Bedrock provides multiple foundational models to build on, including AI21’s Jurassic-2, Anthropic’s Claude model, and Stability AI’s various synthetic media models. The main attraction is the Titan models trained by AWS, one designed for synthesizing document content and another designed for commercial search purposes. There’s also the CodeWhisperer AI programming assistant, a competitor to GitHub’s Copilot program. Offering these programs is another step, but teaching companies about technology and creating programs to customize for AWS customers is an additional step. Only giants like Amazon can attempt this, and as Voicebot founder Bret Kinsella pointed out in his Synthedia newsletter, there really seems to be a need.

“The biggest barrier to adopting generative AI in the enterprise today is the lack of knowledge and expertise to navigate an entirely new technology stack. We have more than the people we need to be successful,” Kinsella explained. “Companies leverage data science and some software engineering teams to lead generative AI projects in-house, but most learn on the job. And AWS is commonly seen as lagging behind the teams at Azure and Google Cloud in generative AI experiences, technology, and market mindshare. It can be a differentiator and can be what you need.”
