Two more Texas Longhorns have entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Ethan Heasley and Matthew Tannebergerneither were in contention for the Longhorns last season, but both are now in the portal.
Heasley’s return
Heathley was part of a group of at least five Longhorns who left the program last season. , struggled mentally, physically and emotionally in sports, had a constant decline in performance, and struggled to stay fit.
“I realized it was time to prioritize my mental health and relationships.”
But after some time away, Heasley is now on the NCAA Transfer Portal, giving him the chance to talk to other programs about transfers. He says he’s just exploring his options for now.
As a 2021 sophomore, Heathley was seeded to score in both the 1-mile and 400 IMs at the NCAA Championship. However, the Longhorns exceeded the maximum allowed 18-man roster slot, and Heasley was one of three swimmers to be dropped from the Nationals team.
A native of Hillsboro, Oregon, he was part of the 2018 Junior Pan Pax team and won the bronze medal behind 3:53.81. Ross Dant and Brendon SmithHe also finished 9th in the 400 IM and 11th in the 200 Freestyle.
As a high school senior at Hillsboro HEAT, Heathley won three events (200 Freestyle, 200 Butterfly, and 200 IM) at the Oregon Senior Championships.
For his achievements outside the pool, Heathley was named to the 2021-2022 CSCAA Scholar All-American Second Team and Academic All-Big 12 First Team. In his freshman year, he was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. He is also his four-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honorary Roll.

Tannenberger
Tanneberger made his last appearance for the Longhorns in the 2021 Big 12 Championship. As a high school senior at Woodlands High School near Houston, he was the Texas 6A State champion in his 200 free (1:37.14) and his 500 free (4:21.64).
Despite going through the transfer portal, he tells SwimSwam that he is considering ending his competitive career.

Tannenberger attends the prestigious McCombs Business School in Texas.
In those freshman Big 12, he was left off the team’s scoring roster, but he swam his best times in 200 frees (1:36.30), 500 frees (4:18.57) and 1650 frees (14:58.94). I was.
Tanneberger hasn’t played for the Longhorns since, but he continues to race. This included his trial (first wave) for the 2021 US Olympic team, where he finished 10th in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:58.24.
He competed in a sectional at College Station in March and finished third in the 200 Free (1:37.14).
